What is GSM in T-Shirts? A Complete Guide to Fabric Weight

If you have ever shopped for t-shirts online, you have probably come across the term "GSM" in product descriptions. But what does it actually mean, and why should you care? Understanding GSM can be the difference between buying a tee that falls apart after three washes and one that holds its shape for years.

GSM stands for Grams per Square Metre. It measures the weight and density of fabric. A higher GSM means a thicker, more substantial fabric. A lower GSM means something lighter and more breathable. Neither is inherently better — it depends on the fit, the climate, and the look you are going for.

Here is a quick breakdown of GSM ranges you will typically encounter. Lightweight tees (120-150 GSM) are the thin, fast-fashion basics that tend to lose shape quickly. Mid-weight tees (160-200 GSM) are your everyday cotton t-shirts with decent structure. Heavyweight tees (220-260 GSM) are premium, structured fabrics that hold an oversized silhouette perfectly. Ultra-heavyweight (280+ GSM) is almost sweatshirt territory, quite stiff and warm.

For oversized graphic tees, the sweet spot is between 220 and 260 GSM. This is exactly why we use 240 GSM combed cotton across most of our collection. At this weight, the fabric has enough body to create that clean, boxy drape that defines the oversized look without feeling like you are wearing a blanket.

The "combed" part matters too. Combed cotton goes through an extra processing step where short fibres are removed, leaving only the longest, strongest threads. The result is a smoother hand feel, better print adhesion, and significantly less pilling over time.

How does GSM affect print quality? Heavier fabrics provide a more stable surface for screen printing and DTG printing. What about Indian weather? This is a fair concern. India is hot for most of the year, so you might think lighter is better. But a well-constructed 240 GSM tee in combed cotton actually breathes surprisingly well. The key is the cotton quality and the knit structure, not just the weight number. Our SUMMER segment uses a lighter 180 GSM for those who prefer maximum airflow, but most of our customers find that 240 GSM works comfortably even in Bangalore summers.

Price is another factor. Heavier fabric costs more per metre, which is why most fast-fashion brands stick to 140-160 GSM. When you see an oversized tee priced at Rs 799 to Rs 999 in 240 GSM cotton, you are getting genuine value — the fabric alone costs more than what some brands charge for the entire finished product.

Bottom line: if you want an oversized tee that holds its shape, looks premium, and survives the washing machine, look for 220 GSM or above. Anything less and you are paying for a silhouette that will sag and stretch within a month.
